Subject: [9fans] failed installation of the 3 diskette system
Date: 26 Oct 1998 19:00:50 +0100

I downloaded those files from ftp://plan9.bell-labs.com/plan9/pcdist .

I trashed the 5 GB disk of a PC close to my desk
to install plan9 on it.
I chose to install DOS 6.2 on a 39 MB FAT partition for `bootstrapping'.

----------

If I use plain `disk1' for booting,
it says, it does a `Protected-mode bootstrap',
but then it complains:

.bad magic 0xfa33c08e not a plan 9 executable!
    Boot devices: hd!0 h!0

and then it prompts:

    boot from:

but it doesn't accept fd!0!/9dos

----------

In what respect is `disk1.nvd' different?

When I use disk1.nvd,
and I go for `1. Install 3 Diskette System to local drive',
the system complains:

An error occurred while trying to build
a Plan 9 partition table for the disc. The
most likely cause is insufficient disc
    space.
Press almost any key to continue...

But there is plenty of disk space.

----------

If I use the disk1.orig,
I do get the following message,
when I go for `1. Install 3 Diskette System to local drive':

There is insuffient disc space after
the DOS partition to install the system.
You need to free 1980224 bytes.
Press any key to continue ...

But as above there is plenty of disk space.

What am I doing wrong?

Cheers,

Jochen
