I see Plan 9 as a research system, just like Amoeba, Sun's Spring... in Plan 9 (and later, Brazil) they have tried new concepts. Now, in Inferno, you can see those concepts applied to a commercial OS. I think that if they have released Plan 9 as they did, they wouldn't mind if other OS developers used the new facilities introduced with Plan 9.
