the correct version of that last, truncated message from me about the plan 9 licence
appeared on friday.  the partial version that appeared today can be ignored; it
was one i was editing when the university modem disconnected
me on friday.  it seems to have been released when the corresponding tcp/ip
connection finally timed out.
