Subject: Making & installing new kernel

Well folks, I thought I knew how to make and install an updated 
kernel for a standalone pc (cdrom version). Recent events have 
convinced me otherwise.
   Could somebody please provide me with something along the lines of 
"Kernel Updating for Morons"?
